Abstract

This study deals with a number of aspects of the words which are usually called adverbs in Latin. It contains on the one hand a critical discussion of their treatment in Latin grammatical studies - the characteristics attributed to them, their relationship to other words - and on the other hand a discussion of the conditions that have to be met in order to achieve a better (sub)classification - general problems of classification as well as criteria for affecting such classification - and a better description of the functions of adverbs in larger constructions. The study contains, therefore, both language-specific sections and more general ones. The author wrote the passages specifically dealing with Latin in such a way that they are clear enough to the non-Latinist, the more general passages in such a way that they are understandable for Latinists who are not acquainted with recent developments in linguistics.

Abstract

This fourth volume of the Iconicity series is like its predecessors devoted to the study of iconicity in language and literature in all its forms. Many of the papers turn the notion of iconicity 'inside-out', some suggesting that 'less-is-more'; others focus on the cognitive factors 'inside' the brain that are important for the iconic phenomena that are produced in the 'outside' world. In addition this volume includes a paper related to iconicity in music and its interaction with language. Other papers range from the theoretical issues involved in the evolution of language, to those that offer many 'inside-out' claims, such as claiming that nouns are derived from pronouns, and as such should more properly be called 'pro-pronouns'. Also, this volume includes perhaps the first English-language analysis of the iconic aspects of sound symbolism in a prayer from the Koran. This is a truly interdisciplinary collection that should turn some of the notions of iconicity in language and literature 'outside-in' and 'inside-out'.

Abstract

The twin concepts of cohesion and coherence have, for a long time, crystallised the key issues of text linguistics. By illustrating the way in which these notions work and are articulated, we put under the spotlight this field which makes textual linguistics a recognisable discipline between pure syntax and discourse analysis. Illustrated by analysed examples, this volume, which represents the result of collective and multidisciplinary reflection by the Linguistics and text pragmatics research team (UMR 6039, CNRS and the University of Nice), aims to identify some landmark work in this field. The notions of cohesion and coherence are actually not clear cut. But rather than simply…

Abstract

The World Atlas of Language Structures is a book and CD combination displaying the structural properties of the world's languages. Its 142 world maps and numerous regional maps are all in full colour. Each world map shows an average of 400 languages and is accompanied by a fully referenced description. The CD provides an interactive version of the database which allows the user to customize the maps and find and test correlations. The Atlas is anindispensable source of information for linguists, anthropologists, and geographers. It will be especially valuable for typologists, grammatical theorists, historical linguists, and those interested in a particular region. It sets new standards in comparative linguistics. No institution involved in language research canafford to be without it.

Abstract

Is philosophy deaf to the sound of the personal voice? While philosophy is experienced at admiring, resenting, celebrating, and, at times, renouncing language, philosophers have rarely succeeded in being intimate with it. Hagi Kenaan argues that philosophy's concern with abstract forms of linguistic meaning and the objective, propositional nature of language has obscured the singular human voice. In this strikingly original work Kenaan explores the ethical and philosophical implications of recognizing and responding to the individual presence in language. In pursuing the philosophical possibility of listening to language as the embodiment of the human voice, Kenaan explores the phenomenological notion of the "personal." He defines the personal as the irresolvable tension that exists between the public character of language, necessary for intelligibility, and the ways in which we, as individuals, remain riveted to our words in a contingently singular manner. The Present Personal fuses phenomenology and aesthetics and the traditions of Continental and Anglo-American philosophy, drawing on Wittgenstein, J. L. Austin, Kant, Kierkegaard, and Heidegger as well as literary works by Kafka, Kundera, and others. By asking new questions and charting fresh terrain, Kenaan does more than offer innovative investigations into the philosophy of language; The Present Personal, and its concern with the intimate and personal nature of language, uncovers the ethical depth of our experience with language. Kenaan begins with a discussion of Kierkegaard's existential critique of language and the ways in which the propositional structure of language does not allow the spoken to reflect the singularity of the self. He then compares two attempts to subvert the "hegemony of content": the pragmatic turn of J. L. Austin and the poetic path of Heidegger. Kenaan concludes by turning to Kant and discovering an analogy between the experience of meaning in language and the aesthetic experience of encountering beauty. Kenaan's reconceptualization of philosophy's approach to language frees the contingent singularity of language while, at the same time, permitting it to continue to dwell within the confines of content.
